It would be nice if a huge box wasn’t required in every room of the house you want TV in. DirecTV’s receiver solves this in a very impractical way. I think the Hopper from DISH makes more sense compared to the HR34. I’ve been playing with a tester Hopper and Joeys that we have here at DISH where I work, and I’ve already found things that I’m going to like about it. It has one main receiver, then a few smaller Joeys that can be hidden away in each TV room. That feature alone is great, but the one I’m looking forward to most on the Hopper is PrimeTime Anytime, which records all four major networks during primetime on one tuner, and keeps them for eight days. That means with PrimeTime Anytime enabled, the Hopper can be recording up to 6 HD shows at once. It also has a portion of the DVR specifically for PrimeTime Anytime, so it doesn’t affect the more than 250 HD hours of HD recording time available on the Hopper for other content. DirecTV has a good concept, but at that cost, count me out. I think the Hopper would be better for sure.

Comment on DirecTV’s new five tuner HR34 Home Media Center DVR ready to launch December 8th? by Riley

DirecTV’s HR34 sounds like it has some good features on it, but a closer look shows you how limited it is. In order to use the receiver-less function, you have to purchase a Smart TV for each room that you don’t want a receiver in. To me, that doesn’t make any sense. DISH announced the Hopper and Joey Whole-Home DVR not too long ago and it sounds like it makes more sense. I’ve been playing with a tester that we have here at DISH where I work, and I already have many features that I’m looking forward to. There is space for more than 250 hours of HD recording, so there isn’t any worry about space. The Hopper can be recording up to 6 shows at once with a feature called PrimeTime Anytime. There is the main Hopper receiver, and there are a few smaller Joey receivers that can be hidden easily. DirecTV and Samsung have a good idea with receiver-less TVs, but at that cost, it isn’t for everyone. The Hopper on the other hand, makes more sense.

I’m not sure what the appeal is of getting rid of your set-top box if you have a good one. Being a long-time subscriber, and more recently an employee of DISH, I’ve been treated to a lot of great equipment over the years, and they have a great app for TV Everywhere that lets me watch TV…well…everywhere. And now they’re going to have an amazing new whole home DVR called the Hopper. Not only is this thing going to have a massive hard drive capable of holding 250 hours of HD programming, but it also can record six shows simultaneously with the PrimeTime Anytime feature enabled. I can’t wait to get one in my home. It’ll be great to have all three of my TVs linked to the same DVR, and this will give me an excuse to put a TV near my workbench in the garage.

I love the name DISH has given its newest HD DVR! The Hopper is such a unique name and it fits its purpose. Now any DISH customer can have DVR functionality in every room of the house. With this much DVR space I can record all my shows without having to sacrifice one or the other. Since I started working at DISH, no DVR has compared to the Hopper. There is finally a whole home DVR system!!

This is great for Netflix subscribers who stayed despite all of the inconvenient changes Netflix put them through last year. However, I feel that Netflix is doing too little too late. I let my subscription to Netflix take the plunge when they decided to turn my service upside down, and I picked up a free 3-month trial of DISH’s Blockbuster Movie Pass. It was a pleasant surprise to not just get streaming and DVD/Blu-ray rentals, but also video game rentals without any extra charges. Now that my 3 months are up, I am keeping the Blockbuster Movie Pass for just $10 a month because I am getting more than I did from Netflix. Although Arrested Development was an excellent show while it aired, it is still not enough for me to go back to Netflix. I work in TV with DISH and I must say that Netflix has a lot of work ahead of them considering that this show has been off the air for so long.

I have just attempted an installation of the all new singing and dancing Lync Client for Mobile from the android website for a Samsung Galaxy SII, and found that it is NOT compatible with the Samsung Galaxy SII!

I am thinking what the hell, why wouldn't it be compatible???

I am sure I can't be reading this right, anyone else with a Samsung Galaxy SII who has successfully installed the Lync Client for Mobile Android?

Cheers
