Android Overload: Google to cut 10% of Motorola’s workforce, Microsoft wants to ban Google apps from schools, and more [VIDEO]

Post Image

The Android Overload is where we feature the biggest news stories from throughout the day (see above video), as well as stash all of the stories/articles/news bits that didn’t make it onto our front page. But just because they weren’t featured doesn’t mean they aren’t worth taking a look at. In fact, there’s almost always [...]

Analyst: Google Nexus 7 sales have topped 4.5 million

Post Image

Google has experienced healthy sales of their Nexus 7 tablet, but you won’t hear it from them. According to analyst Benedict Evans, the company has sold between 4.5 and 4.6 million slates since launching last summer. While the figure is a triumph for Google — the company had hoped to sell 3 million tablets by [...]

Google is reportedly set to launch a small update to Android 4.2 later this month, according to a report from The International Business Times. The update, which could be the last for the Jelly Bean version of Android before Key Lime Pie debuts at May’s Google I/O conference, is said to bring minor fixes and [...]

Sony sells famed NYC headquarters for $1.1 billion

Post Image

Sony (SNE) on Thursday announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its famed 550 Madison headquarters in New York City. The 37-story building is being purchased by a group of investors led by The Chetrit Group, a New York-based company the owns a number of commercial properties in New York City and other major U.S real estate markets, for $1.1 billion. The sale will help Sony pay off debt and is expected to generate net cash proceeds of about $770 million. BGR exclusively reported Sony’s plans for the sale last October, noting that the company was originally trying to sell the property for between $1.5 billion and $2 billion. As part of the terms of the agreement,

Leaked BlackBerry 10 sales manual reveals new images and details

Post Image

The buzz continues to mount leading up to the January 30th unveiling of Research In Motions’s (RIMM) next-generation BlackBerry 10 platform, but we’re not sure how much is left to learn. Many BlackBerry 10 features have already been announced, we’ve seen RIM’s first two next-generation handsets — the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry X10 — a number times, and now Rogers’ internal sales manual for BlackBerry 10 devices has leaked thanks to CrackBerry. The manual is packed full of images and it also confirms some specs reported a few months ago, and the full document is embedded at the source link below. RIM’s next-generation operating system and handsets will be unveiled during a press conference on January 30th, and BGR

Sprint confirms it will launch BlackBerry 10 later this year

Post Image

Three of the four major nationwide wireless carriers in the U.S. confirmed earlier this week that they have plans to launch phones running Research In Motion’s (RIMM) new BlackBerry 10 platform following its debut later this month. Sprint (S), the fourth major U.S. carrier, did not initially confirm that it will support BlackBerry 10 phones. While the carrier is keeping its plans quiet for the most part, company spokesman Mark Elliot confirmed to BGR that Sprint will launch at least one device powered by RIM’s new operating system in 2013. “Sprint plans to bring BlackBerry 10 to our customers later this year,” Elliot told BGR via email. ”We will share more details soon.” RIM will unveil the finished version of its

Is BlackBerry back? Strong early BlackBerry 10 demand could signal RIM comeback

Post Image

After hitting a rough patch that seemed to last for most of 2012, Research In Motion (RIMM) may finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. RIM plans to unveil the finished version of its next-generation BlackBerry 10 platform at a press conference on January 30th, and at least one new smartphone is expected to be revealed during the event. Generating interest in BlackBerry 10 within the crowded global smartphone market will be no easy task for the struggling vendor, but if demand at top Canadian carrier Rogers is any indication, RIM is off to a promising start. In mid-December, Rogers began taking reservations for RIM’s first BlackBerry 10-powered handset. The carrier offered almost no information about the

Does a Samsung Tizen phone in 2013 signal a shift away from Android?

Post Image

Samsung has confirmed for Bloomberg Businessweek that it intends to ship not one, but multiple Tizen-based smartphones this year. The phones, which would rely on a platform that shares much of its DNA with the abandoned Samsung pet project Bada OS, won’t be scheduled for a wide release, but their impact on the Korean company’s mobile [...]

Verizon cuts HTC Windows Phone 8X to $99.99

Post Image

We recently called HTC’s (2498) Windows Phone 8X one of the best-designed smartphones of all time, but the sleek handset has been overshadowed this holiday season by it’s Windows Phone rival, the Nokia (NOK) Lumia 920. Rumblings from our sources suggest end-users sales have been slow going for the 8X, though we have heard that it sold fairly well in some U.S. markets ahead of the holidays. In an effort to bolster sales at Verizon Wireless (VZ) moving into 2013, the carrier recently dropped the price of the phone to $99.99 on contract, a great bargain for this sleek Windows Phone 8 handset. BGR reviewed the Windows Phone 8X in October and called it an outstanding smartphone despite its unavoidable shortcomings, such

Microsoft barely scratches the Surface: Surface accounts for just 0.13% of tablet traffic

Post Image

Microsoft’s (MSFT) Surface tablet, the company’s premiere Windows hardware offering, has seemingly not been well-received by the public. BGR saw a great deal of potential in the Surface when we reviewed it in October, but consumers have not been swayed by the slate’s sleek hardware and unique interface. Microsoft has reportedly cut its fourth-quarter orders with manufacturing partners in half, and one firm estimates that the company will sell fewer than 1 million Surface tablets in 2012. Now, a new report suggests Surface sales may be even slower than we thought. Advertising firm Chitika reported on Tuesday that Microsoft’s Surface tablet accounted for just 0.13% of tablet traffic across its network in the United States and Canada. The firm’s data
